I have been wanting to start a cooking blog for a while. This recipe is what pushed me over the edge! I made it for dinner and fell in love. I saw Sharlene Wells Hawkes (Miss Utah & Miss America from my youth) make it on Studio 5. I thought it sounded good, but it definitely exceeded my expectations! I halved this recipe (& used a smaller pan) for my little family.
1/4 cup butter
3 medium apples (thinly sliced and pared-I used Granny Smith)
8 eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups milk
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon (I didn't measure my cinnamon, I just eyed it as I sprinkled.)
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Slice up butter in 9x13 pan and place in oven while preparing the apples. Put sliced apples in warm butter, spread them out and sprinkle half of the cinnamon over them...place back in the oven. Beat eggs, flour, milk and salt together for 1 minute. Pour batter over apples. Sprinkle brown sugar and the rest of the cinnamon over the entire top. Place in oven for about 20 minutes until puffed and golden brown. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
Top with syrup. Bring ingredients to a boil until sugar dissolves, stir and remove from the heat.
2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1/2 tsp. maple flavoring
It just so happens that this is the syrup recipe I was raised on. I love it! It is on the back of the Mapleine (by Crescent) box. You can buy it on the baking or breakfast aisle. Enjoy!
Ines-is this really German at all?

German Apple Pancakes

I've lived in Germany for 24 years, but have never had anything like it. We have German Apple Pancakes, but they are way different. German Chocolate Cake is the same way - in Germany they would never put coconut on a chocolate cake - just a chocolate glaze. Real German Pancakes are actually kind of like French Crepes, just a little thicker - the list goes on and on. Recipes change over the years, and from one kitchen to the next, or one country to the next, so it's OK - I'm not offended. I like a good recipe as much as the next guy (or gal):)
I made these for my family this morning. You are right--they are amazing! Definitely a new family favorite we'll be repeating. Thanks for sharing!
